Local Leader Spotlight:

Azmina and Shayna

Azmina and Shayna find joy and inspiration in organizing their local P.ink Day event every year.

Azmina and Shayna have been involved with P.ink in different capacities since it was just an idea. Starting in 2015, they became co-leads for the P.ink Day New York City event. Here’s what we learned from Azmina and Shayna about their experience.

Why did you want to become a Local Leader for P.ink Days?

Azmina: I became involved for so many reasons. Ultimately, it was to use my skills in service of our mission to help survivors reclaim control of their journeys and bodies. I had also experienced breast cancer in my family, so the cause is very close to me. I also truly enjoyed planning the event. Because this was not just any tattoo experience, we really did have to think through every detail for facilitating a comfortable and positive experience. I’m an Experience Designer by profession so this fell within my wheelhouse. From pre-event communications, to how guests would be greeted at the entrance, to making sure everyone was fed and comfortable, to the tattoo revelations, to the aftermath—no detail was too small. We mapped out every step visually, which was really amazing to see come to life. I saw how the first P.ink Day was so transformative for the recipients and wanted to be more deeply involved. It’s been so wonderful to help facilitate such a special experience for recipients.

“P.ink isn’t just any tattoo experience, it’s a healthcare experience. So we want to make sure, especially for people who are getting tattoos for the first time, that this is a really special experience and that they really feel taken care of.”

– Azmina

What is your favorite part of leading a P.ink Day event?

Azmina: They are limitless! From calling recipients to let them know that they’ve been selected (it’s like telling them they’ve won the lottery – their reactions are so precious!). To meeting with the recipients, their family and friends, and tattoo artists at the meet and greet prior to the event. To the actual event, especially the opening circle in the morning where we dedicate time for each and every person present to introduce themselves and tell their stories (which is such an intimate and moving experience). To the buzzing sound of the tattoos being drawn, bringing in a wave of calm. To the final moments when tattoos are revealed for the first time. To working with such talented tattoo artists and sponsors whose generosity cannot go unnoticed. To of course collaborating with my co-lead and dear friend, Shayna, and all our wonderful volunteers.

Azmina and Shayna had an in-depth conversation about their work with P.ink where they discuss what it means to be a Local Leader, why they care so much about P.ink, and their favorite memories with the program.
